Ending a Copier Lease

If you are coming to the end of your lease then you need to make sure you know what’s going to happen to your copier. It is not uncommon to see people who are diligent about their lease until it comes to and end. This can be a costly mistake. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that your leasing company is going to take your copier for you. Returning a copier doesn’t have to be hard, it’s just that people don’t know what they are getting themselves into. If you read through your lease early on then you should be able to plan ahead for whatever comes your way.

  1. Find out if you have automatic rollover. If you do then this will allow your company to renew your contract unless you specifically specify otherwise. This can lead to you working with the same company, with the same bad copier for several additional months.
  2. Find out who is returning the copier. It is usually up to the person who leased the copier to have it sent back. Double check in your lease, and if it is your responsibility then you should being looking for a deal early. If you wait until the end then you could be spending $100s to have your machine returned.
  3. Know your shipping rules. Some things like toner and paper trays may need to be packaged separately. Make sure you follow the rules so that you don’t get fined.

Ending a copier lease is all about following the rules. You should be fine as long as you research early on. Don’t get complacent because it can come back to bite you.
